“‘Give thanks to the LORD, call on His name. Make known His deeds among the peoples; make them remember that His name is exalted.’ Praise the LORD in song, for He has done excellent things; let this be known throughout the earth.”
Isaiah 12:4,5
It is Thanksgiving again in America. We hope and pray that your Thanksgiving will be filled with family fun, plenty of food, and visiting. But why do we celebrate this day? Why was America the first nation to proclaim Thanksgiving as a national holiday? Just maybe because the original “Americans” (Native- host people) had a tradition of giving thanks to Father Creator for their harvest; or maybe as the English colonies had much to thank the Lord for- their right to practice their religion as they thought best and a land to make a New Beginning.
Over the years what has happened to this day of Thanksgiving?? Now you go to stores and Thanksgiving is almost forgotten- only the commercial side of Christmas is seen. Yes, we do get together for the “big Thanksgiving dinner”, but the “maker of the feast” is all but forgotten. Rather than sitting around a warm fire reading His Word, worshiping, and thanking the Creator of the universe, we sit around the T.V. and focus on how well one team can beat up the other, and the kids circle around their favorite video games. Now the family is too busy texting on their phones to talk and enjoy one another.
If you are a Christian should this be so?? Do we not have much to give thanks for?? This Thanksgiving why not start by giving thanks to the Lord for our life, and then His son, Jesus Christ who gave you a New Life; a life of Joy, Peace and Love.
“Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
1 Corinthians 15:57
This Thanksgiving, take David’s in the book of Psalms by reading to your family how he gave thanks to the Lord. You can make this Thanksgiving very special for your family. Around your Thanksgiving table pray. For example:
It is good to give thanks to the LORD and to sing praises to Your name, O Most High; to declare Your loving kindness in the morning and Your faithfulness by night.”
Psalm 92:1,2
“Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.”
Colossians 3:17
So this Thanksgiving, reclaim this special day and remember your many blessings by giving thanksgiving to our Lord; thanking the Lord for all He has done, your New victorious life in Jesus Christ, your family, friends, home, Clan, tribe, and community.
Also, make a special prayer for the Gospel to be effectively presented to Native Americans , that the Holy Spirit would reveal Christ’s love and Hope for them!
