Traditions: "Father-Creator's Earth"
Recently I took a retreat in the
Columbia Gorge, east of Portland, Oregon. As I waved goodbye to my
wife, Jan and our 3 children, I set sail for a small island just
opposite Multnomah Falls, a majestic sight. The water plummets off
the cliffside of the gorge flowing from the snow pack on Mt. Hood.
As I looked behind to the west the Creator was making a sunset
with warm colors of reds and oranges. I headed for the island that
lay a mile up the Columbia. We call it "Eagle Island". The
Columbia borders Washington to the north and Oregon to the south.
The Cascade Mountains that the gorge passes through were set in
colors of purple and soft grays. Both sides are covered in lushes
hues of green, with cliffs covered with moss and tall firs.
While I was meditating on what a wondrous, loving Creator we have,
an eagle flew across my path, carrying a large salmon, a real
feast for her young ones. As I reach the shore it's always
exciting to see how the winter storms have shaped the island.
Among Native host people there is a great respect and appreciation
of "Mother Earth" - the Land. There are many different creation
stories, yet one thing they have in common is that the world we
live in WAS CREATED.
God's WORD tells us the Creator that made such a wonderful,
awesome world for us was Father-Creator and his son, Jesus.
Gen 1:26-27: Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, in
our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the
birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over
all the creatures that move along the ground." So God created man
in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and
female he created them. (NIV)

Zuni and Bureau of Land Management fight over lake
Zuni Salt Lake is a sacred area for the Pueblo tribes of New
Mexico. A high desert lake that partly evaporates in the summer
heat is a place of pilgrimage to gather salt for ceremonial and
culinary purposes. The Bureau of Land Management wants to use the
area to mine coal even though the area has an estimated 5000
archeology sites.
Canadian Legislation designed to promote sel-government
Legislation will give native tribes the ability to manage their
own finances and govern themselves after the reform of the Indian
Act.
Walking
a New Path
(Part 7
from Lesson 1: Basic Discipleship Course)
As you start your new
walk as a Christian, it is important to learn some basics on how
to walk and what you can expect along the way. You also need to
know how to stay on the path and not get lost along the way.
You can get off the path by making bad choices of T. V. movies,
friends - doing what " feels good" – what our body wants - not
what is the best.
I John 2:15-17: Do not love the world or anything in the
world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in
him. For everything in the world- the cravings of sinful man, the
lust of his eyes and the boasting of what he has and does- comes
not from the Father but from the world. The world and its desires
pass away, but the man who does the will of God lives forever.
As we walk down the path following Jesus, he gives us the power to
become more like him. When we become a Christian, he gives us the
Holy Spirit, which is with us to comfort and guide us along the
path.
Here are some ways to help you stay on the path to the "valley of
abundant life" in Christ:
-
Through Christ's
power, forgive others that have hurt you
-
Increase your faith
through reading the Word (Bible)
-
Pray daily (Matt.
6:9-13)
-
Obey God’s Word- day
by day - hour by hour. If you sin, confess to God and go on.
-
Trust in Jesus (1
Peter 5:17)
-
Let the Holy Spirit
come into all the rooms of your life (Acts 1:8)
-
Join a church where
the people believe in being born again so you can learn about the
-
Bible - one that
encourages you to grow spiritual
-
Be with other
Christians
-
Share your faith
"witnessing" (John 15:18)
You say, "How do I do
this?" This is why "Walking a New Path" was written - to help you,
as a Native American, to grow in Christ - to WALK HIS PATH! God is
with you on your new journey through life.
